Art, as with beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. We don’t all have the same criteria for what constitutes a beautiful piece of artwork, but that’s what makes us all unique. And that’s what I love about art- it’s as unique and individualized as each one of us!
By definition, art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture. Throughout time, different types of art have emerged are categorized based on similarities. So what type of art tells your story? To find out, let’s explore a few types of art.
Abstract Art
Abstract art was Pablo Picasso’s preferred approach to artistic expression. Abstract art embraces the idea that whether you are looking at a sculpture or painting, the image doesn’t have to necessarily be recognizable. Additionally, the artist relies on color and shape to show emotions. I love this type of artwork because it makes great conversation, given that each eye depicts something a little bit different in the image.
Figurative Art
Contrary to abstract art, figurative art describes artwork that is clearly derived from real object sources, so by definition, they contain commonly recognizable images, oftentimes a human figure. This type of artwork can be very calming and comfortable to a traditionalist or someone who enjoys structure. Famous figurative artists are Rembrandt and Michelangelo.
Landscape Art
Landscape art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. The main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. These are great pieces to bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home or office…particularly if you enjoy a landscape scene that doesn’t naturally occur in your locale. Monet’s works are a wonderful example of this type of art.
So if you’ve always used the visual approach to choose your art pieces and weren’t really sure how to define your preferences, you can now easily communicate the artwork that invokes the emotions that please you the most!
